where are the wild things?? enlighten me!

so for my nablopomo post today, i was going to post about where the wild things are.  i had plans to see it tonight and wanted to write about it when i got home.

but, um…what was it about?  did it have a plot?  was there some super secret thing i missed that should have made me understand it?

i think i’m pretty hip when it comes weird music and weird movies.   i get weird – i LIKE weird.  but this movie?  made ZERO sense.

as one of my friends put it, it was like “indie screenwriters were high on some pot laced with something, while one of their kids was over in the corner reading that book.  they’re trying to figure out what their new screenplay should be and one of them says they should make that book into a movie.  and this is what came out of it.”

the cinematography was great.  the music was great.  but i absolutely did not get it.

fill me in??

first, did you read my post? i will briefly describe some details from that…. of course, the book didn’t leave for much to work with. so they had to create a story. you have a divorced, single, hard working mom; and a boy and girl that are kinda left defending for themselves. max is trying to deal with those emotions… so the whole time on the island would be “the wild rumpus” (just for a book reference). all the scenes mirrored how he was feeling and some actual events from his real life. like destroying the houses would be like him going in and destroying claire’s room… and each monster represented a part of his emotion or someone in his life. the whole movie was like his life playing out in an imaginative form. it was almost so simple that i suppose most people would miss it due to it looking so weird and complicated. really, it was just a lot of symbolism. thats my opinion.

[and then again, maybe dark and twisty children of divorce just make assumptions of how max feels based on how they felt during the movie ;-) ]

i did read your post last night…you had some great points! i do see what you’re saying with the symbolism….i guess i’m just disappointed that all the “back story” they had to add to make it into a full length movie turned out so…dark. :(
